Official Club Status LAW CLUB The Dawson Law Club fosters an environment which is conducive to all students, regardless of their program of study. The goal of this club is not to provide legal education, but rather to cultivate and nurture an interest students might have in broad aspects relating to law. During the semester, students can expect public speaking, oral advocacy and critical thinking skills to be honed through various activities available to all of the Dawson student body. It is important to note that the Dawson Law Club is an educational extracurricular run by students, for the students, and therefore does not reflect the structure of a legal aid institution Official Club Status GREEN EARTH CLUB The environment is the most important and most precious resource that we have. We as humans have made a great deal of mistakes, and among them is treating the earth, the air and the waters as if they were disposable. Dawson’s students are squeezed into a campus that is too small for them- according to Quebec’s own norms for all students. Students at Dawson have 30 per cent less space for classes, labs, learning activities, sports, student life, studying, socializing, eating than students at other CEGEPs in Quebec. Dawson’s space deficit was recognized by the ministry years ago and reaffirmed in December 2021. For the past seven years, in frequent consultation with the government, a team at Dawson has been developing an innovative solution to add the required space, the space that is owed to our students. The new pavilion project would house the seven medical technology programs and advance a new way of training Quebec’s future healthcare workers. Suddenly on Jan. 28, 2022 – with no prior warning – the Government of Quebec announced to Dawson that the new pavilion project was “uncertain.” Over the month of February, the government shifted from using the word “uncertain” to “cancelled.” The project is still possible until the spring budget for Quebec is presented on March 22. QCGN Webinar On Wednesday, February 23, 2022, the QCGN hosted a webinar focusing on the Quebec government's decision to abandon its plans for an expansion of Dawson College in favour of prioritizing French-language CEGEPs. The webinar featured the following: Alexandrah Cardona, current President of the Dawson Student Union; Richard Filion, former Director General of Dawson College; and Tim Miller, Dawson faculty member in the Physiotherapy Technology Department. Matt Aronson, secretary of the QCGN board of directors, acted as moderator.

You can copy paste these letters and sign or customize: Template letter to Premier in French Template letter to Premier in English Position on Bill 96 The Coalition of Anglophone students Association of Quebec (CASAQ) disagrees with section II of the Bill 96 pertaining to college and university education, which establishes a 17.5% student admissibility quota reserved for incoming francophone and allophone students of all available seats to anglophone CEGEPs, and which implements a mandatory exit exam in French, for the following reasons: The Bill restricts individual rights of students to decide their language of education in relation to their career objectives Students and CEGEP administrations were not implicated nor consulted in the conception of the Bill The Bill places francophone students at a disadvantage while intensifying competition for admission to anglophone CEGEPs meaning that that admission to collegiate institutions will not be completely based on merit The Bill forces students to take an additional exam in order to graduate, which constitutes an additional source of stress The Bill makes special provisions for certain foreign students, who are favoured in the selection process for admission to anglophone CEGEPs while being exempted from the final exit exam in French The Bill does not take into consideration students attending English CEGEP who decide to attend French university The Bill disregards other decisive factors (i.e. student life quality, location) that lead up to students’ final decision when considering possible CEGEPs Instead, and to fulfill the Bill’s objective of preserving the vitality of the French language, the CASAQ suggests: Promoting French-language cultural activities Ensuring the accessibility of study and career opportunities in French Encouraging the translation of certain academic documents into both languages Making available to students a universal guide to bilingual terminology for each discipline Creating a network of guest lecturers and francophone researchers Imposing in the curriculum a third course in francophone literature or a new course in Quebec culture. QCGN Webinar he Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN), in collaboration with the English Parents’ Committee Association (EPCA), Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA), and Quebec Federation of Home & School Associations (QFHSA), hosted a webinar on the impact of Bill 96 on student success. Education has been at the forefront of ongoing discussions in Bill 96’s clause-by-clause review, and questions remain about the impact of a freeze on enrolment and additional obligatory courses in French on student success. In this webinar, we heard from: Christian Corno, Director General of Marianopolis College; Alexandrah Cardona, President of the Dawson Student Union; Katherine Korakakis, President of the English Parents’ Committee Association; Cindy Finn, Director General of the Lester B. Pearson School Board. This webinar was moderated by Michael Goldbloom, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Bishop's University.

- Strike Solidarity 2021 | Dawson Student Union
Strike Solidarity 2021 On March 31st, 2020, one year ago, the collective agreements that protect the salaries and working conditions of Quebec's CEGEP teachers, professionals and support staff employees expired. Across the province, unions representing public sector employees are pleading for increased investment in Quebec's health, school, and higher education networks, on a level necessary to protect workers' purchasing power, and to improve the level and quality of the services that citizens depend on every day. The Dawson Student Union stands in solidarity with the thousands of staff and employees of Dawson College. We encourage our membership, the students of Dawson College, to support this effort to protect and promote higher education. If you recognize the value of your publicly funded CEGEP education, and appreciate the academic, extracurricular and social supports you've received from Dawson College, then this is your chance to support your TEACHERS, COUNSELLORS, ADVISORS, LIBRARIANS, LAB AND COMPUTER TECHNICIANS, STUDENT LIFE COORDINATORS ETC. Your action – in class or on the street - could go a long way to showing our government and college administrators that, following years of chronic under-investment in public services, enough is enough: we are sounding the alarm! The Dawson Student Union stands in solidarity with the Dawson Teachers’ Union (DTU) Association of Dawson Professionals (ADP) Dawson Support Staff Union (DSSU). We invite all students to download the following graphics and to use them during class to show support to our fellow unions. Students will be able to vote starting on May 13th at 12 a.m. until May 14th at 4 p.m. New DSU Constitution Students will be asked to vote on a new constitution for the DSU. This new document will serve as the union`s By-Laws and Constitution and shall be one of the Union`s most important documents. The Union`s constitution has to be updated to ensure that it never becomes obsolete. Unfortunately, due to a complicated amending formula, the By-laws had not been updated in almost half a decade. Our team made a commitment 9 months ago to have a new constitution by the end of our mandate. We hope to make good on that promise. To find more about the incoming changes with the new constitution, please consult both documents below. Referendum Question Do you ratify the Constitution of the Dawson Student Union, which was approved by the Board of Directors on April 26, 2021, and by the General Assembly on April 27, 2021, to be the official General By-Laws of the Dawson Student Union and replace all previous documents? Student Group Insurance Plan Students will have the chance to vote on a new insurance plan. This plan will cover students for health, dental, travel while also offering a mental health service, telemedicine service and legal assistance service. The plan will be offered by a well-established student insurance plan provider called StudentCare. They currently offer coverages for universities such as McGill, Concordia and the University of Toronto! For more information on StudentCare, you can visit their website https://www.studentcare.ca/ Students were surveyed on the matter and the results indicated that our members wanted a complete insurance plan. Results of the Survey can be found here . Students can find more detailed information on the plan by clicking here . Referendum Question Do you ratify the addition of the DSU Health and Dental plan, approved by the DSU Executive Committee on April 29, 2021? The plan would be funded by an optional fee of a total of 183$ for a twelve(12) months coverage which includes mental health, health coverage, dental coverage, travel insurance, legal protection, and telemedicine? Members will have the choice to select according to their needs whether they want coverage for all the mentioned above or select the coverage they need for either dental (50$ per year), only health (50$ per year) or additional services which include telemedicine and legal protection (83$). Specific coverages will be listed below. The DSU student health and dental plan fee would be added to Annex A of the DSU Constitution. The health and dental plan fee to cover the cost of the plan would be considered part of the DSU membership fee under an Act respecting the Accreditation and Financing of Student Associations, R.S.Q., c. A-3.01. All DSU members would be able to opt-out of this fee on an annual basis during an opt-out period set up under the provisions of the plan. Modification of the Membership Fee Students will also be asked to vote on a new membership fee. This would be the first modification in over 10 years. It is important for the union`s long-term financial health that the fee be revised on a regular basis. For more information on the student fee modification, click here. Referendum Question Do you ratify setting the membership fee in Annex A of the Dawson Student Union Constitution from $19 to $22 per semester for full-time students and from $9.50 to $11 per semester for part-time students to reflect the increase in inflation from last time the fee was set in 2011? The fee would be revised every three (3) years according to the change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) and rounded to the nearest half-dollar. In the event where a fee increase is not ratified, the amounts mentioned in Annex A of the new constitution for fees would be changed to the current fee levels set in 2011 previously mentioned. If you have any questions concerning the referendum questions, please feel free to contact general@dawsonstudentunion.com. For any questions on logistical and voting matters for the 2021 Referendum, please contact elections@dawsonstudentunion.com. New Constitution Additional Information on the New Constitution
