COMMUNITY & ACTIVISM CLUBS Official Club Status THE LEGACY The primary objective of The Legacy is to create a welcoming and inclusive space for individuals to meet and connect. We aim to raise awareness about the unique experiences and challenges faced by Afro-Carebeans. Moreover, our club seeks to promote the rich and diverse cultures of African and Caribbean countries, serving as a platform for cultural exchange and appreciation. Official Club Status LAW CLUB The Dawson Law Club fosters an environment which is conducive to all students, regardless of their program of study. The goal of this club is not to provide legal education, but rather to cultivate and nurture an interest students might have in broad aspects relating to law. During the semester, students can expect public speaking, oral advocacy and critical thinking skills to be honed through various activities available to all of the Dawson student body. It is important to note that the Dawson Law Club is an educational extracurricular run by students, for the students, and therefore does not reflect the structure of a legal aid institution Official Club Status GREEN EARTH CLUB The environment is the most important and most precious resource that we have. We as humans have made a great deal of mistakes, and among them is treating the earth, the air and the waters as if they were disposable. We at Green Earth are motivated to spreading as much awareness as we can about this dire issue, mobilizing students to take action against policies that would seek to threaten that precious asset and supporting groups who share our views and seek to make the world a better place for us all. Fighting for the environment for 51 years and counting! Official Club Status DAWSON FEMINIST UNION The Dawson Feminist Union is a club that advocates for women's rights and gender equity in the world, especially in our community at Dawson. We host events and fundraisers that give visibility to people and organizations who are actively supporting genders' rights. Official Club Status ETCETERA Founded in 1985 by Joe Rose, Etcetera is Dawson's 2SLGBTQIA+ club. Our club offers a safe space for queer students, but also multiple opportunities, thanks to our ties with external organisms. Plus, getting involved in the club can lead to bringing more opportunities and events to fellow queer students. Etcetera is a shapeshifter: it relies on responding to our community's needs, whichever they may be, and on spreading awareness about the beauty of our community but also about the issues our community faces. You can copy paste these letters and sign or customize: Template letter to Premier in French Template letter to Premier in English Position on Bill 96 The Coalition of Anglophone students Association of Quebec (CASAQ) disagrees with section II of the Bill 96 pertaining to college and university education, which establishes a 17.5% student admissibility quota reserved for incoming francophone and allophone students of all available seats to anglophone CEGEPs, and which implements a mandatory exit exam in French, for the following reasons: The Bill restricts individual rights of students to decide their language of education in relation to their career objectives Students and CEGEP administrations were not implicated nor consulted in the conception of the Bill The Bill places francophone students at a disadvantage while intensifying competition for admission to anglophone CEGEPs meaning that that admission to collegiate institutions will not be completely based on merit The Bill forces students to take an additional exam in order to graduate, which constitutes an additional source of stress The Bill makes special provisions for certain foreign students, who are favoured in the selection process for admission to anglophone CEGEPs while being exempted from the final exit exam in French The Bill does not take into consideration students attending English CEGEP who decide to attend French university The Bill disregards other decisive factors (i.e. student life quality, location) that lead up to students’ final decision when considering possible CEGEPs Instead, and to fulfill the Bill’s objective of preserving the vitality of the French language, the CASAQ suggests: Promoting French-language cultural activities Ensuring the accessibility of study and career opportunities in French Encouraging the translation of certain academic documents into both languages Making available to students a universal guide to bilingual terminology for each discipline Creating a network of guest lecturers and francophone researchers Imposing in the curriculum a third course in francophone literature or a new course in Quebec culture. QCGN Webinar he Quebec Community Groups Network (QCGN), in collaboration with the English Parents’ Committee Association (EPCA), Quebec English School Boards Association (QESBA), and Quebec Federation of Home & School Associations (QFHSA), hosted a webinar on the impact of Bill 96 on student success. Education has been at the forefront of ongoing discussions in Bill 96’s clause-by-clause review, and questions remain about the impact of a freeze on enrolment and additional obligatory courses in French on student success. In this webinar, we heard from: Christian Corno, Director General of Marianopolis College; Alexandrah Cardona, President of the Dawson Student Union; Katherine Korakakis, President of the English Parents’ Committee Association; Cindy Finn, Director General of the Lester B. Pearson School Board. This webinar was moderated by Michael Goldbloom, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Bishop's University.
- Dawson Brushes off the Welcome Mat for Old and New Students Alike
Dawson Brushes off the Welcome Mat for Old and New Students Alike < Back Dawson Brushes off the Welcome Mat for Old and New Students Alike Dawson Brushes off the Welcome Mat for Old and New Students Alike Students show old and new cohorts Dawson campus after many months closed November 23rd, 2021 by Isabella Ruvo Welcome Week was divided into three components during the 9th to 16th of August: Zoom info sessions; pre-recorded videos by the academic administration and student services; in-person visits. Due to lower COVID-19 restrictions, old and new students were finally able to visit campus and participate in Dawson’s student life. During this time, students were invited to take a small tour given by second and third years. Welcome Week gave Dawson College a chance to finally have some life in its halls once again. ONLINE Program specific Zoom info sessions were given the 10th to 12th of August. This gave students a chance to learn more pertinent information about their programs. They wouldn’t have to start the semester going in cold turkey. For most, this was their first year, first semester, first everything, which can be very stressful. That’s why Dawson tried to share as many details as they could with the future student body. “Getting to meet some people from my program really eased my transition into Cegep. I didn’t have any friends in my courses but I was able to make new ones easily!” - Anonymous . Students also got to meet their program coordinator(s), which made the experience much more humane. It was comforting to know there was someone you could rely on for your education. VISITORS The highlight of Welcome Week was being able to have students visiting the college. After a year and a half of COVID-19 limiting the number of students on campus, it was nice to see some old and new faces inhabiting the school. Guided tours lasted about 10 to 15 minutes, where they were shown the important locations of the school such as the library, the cafeteria, the atrium, etc. Many newcomers were shocked at seeing the many escalators going up but none going back down. One of the many things to learn about how to get around campus. “I think it was pretty fast, and we just went through the college a little too fast and I couldn’t really remember the places but it was really fun overall.” –Najlaa Achouhal. VOLUNTEERS Not only were there volunteers to give tours, but there were many other volunteers set up in Conrod’s, spreading information and goodies. Tables set up to promote the DSU, the hive and the plant were all present. Their aim was to share with new students what campus life looks like and encourage newcomers to join student-run initiatives. By following the clubs on Instagram, students would receive goodies such as DSU merch, reusable straws, bamboo utensils, etc. “Even though I’ve been at Dawson for 2-3 years, this was my first volunteering experience and it was fun and very entertaining because people made it fun.”-- Anonymous DSU volunteers felt the good vibes collaborating with one another even if for some, it was their first time volunteering. “20 on 10! People that came up to me were so nice so quickly. I didn’t feel out of place and they would hold my hand helping me with tasks.” -Fay. Summary for newsletter: From the 9th to the 16th of August, Dawson welcome its old and new students in a hybrid format. The start of semesters are always tricky but Fall 2021 was even more so because students had hardly stepped foot on Dawson grounds in months. Thankfully, DSU had a team of volunteers that set up tables to welcome them and tours to show them around. Click here to read more about it. Project Gallery Previous Next
